Since our first day of operation, we’ve been using Kiwi ingredients. When we opened our first New Zealand restaurant in Porirua in 1976, we worked with GSF Fresh! New Zealand to provide our onions, grown in North Waikato and Franklin.
Over the past 40 plus years we’ve done some growing ourselves, and GSF Fresh! has kept up with ease, matching our pace as demand grew and grew quickly. In 2020, they supplied us with an average of 225,000kgs of brown and red onions.
Our brown onions are finely chopped to give that extra bit of flavour to Big Macs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers. They’re also chopped in larger slivers for our Quarter Pounders. Red onions are chopped and mixed through our salads, wraps and other burgers and specialty menu items.
Grown in the fertile soils of Pukekohe and Matamata, 380 acres of land are dedicated solely to growing high-quality onions for McDonald’s menu items. The farmers plant once a year to produce the onions we need for our burgers, which means we have to be very organised and quite accurate with our order. The onions are stored whole and unpeeled until we need them.
In fact, Kiwi farmers produce such high quality onions that we decided to begin exporting them to our neighbours in Aussie where New Zealand grown onions are used in Big Macs, cheeseburgers, wraps and more.
